The Bad Baby Sleep Advice We Couldn’t Ignore

We’re breaking our usual flow to talk about advice that crossed a line.

Hi Nap Trappers,

This week’s newsletter comes to you as a personal letter from us, ahead of today’s episode. In this episode, we discuss some baby sleep advice we came across on social media last week that really got to us.

Honestly, it made us upset.

It felt inappropriate, harmful, and far outside the scope of what a sleep consultant should be sharing - particularly when it involved suggesting a potential neurodivergence diagnosis for a family, then posting about it online.

Of course, we don’t know the full details of the client’s situation, the specific advice given, or the reasoning behind it. Our reaction is based solely on the social media content, and that’s part of the problem.

Advice shared online, especially without context, is wide open to interpretation and can easily be misapplied or misunderstood.

We want to be clear: this isn’t about calling out or criticising another consultant personally.

We know we’re not perfect either.

But we believe it’s important to use our platform to call out misinformation and overstepping of professional boundaries when we see it - especially when it has the potential to harm families.

We also want to be upfront: we see plenty of baby sleep advice online that doesn’t align with our approach, and usually, we just scroll on by. (And we encourage you to do the same - even with our content if it’s not serving you!)

But this felt different. This felt like it could genuinely mislead or harm families who are already vulnerable and seeking support.

We’re not trying to dismiss the very real challenges that come with sleep for neurodivergent babies and children, or for families navigating complex needs.

Our point is that diagnosing (or even suggesting a diagnosis) is simply not within the scope of a sleep consultant’s role - let alone sharing such advice publicly.
